Possible Questions and Answers I:

1. Why do you want to go to US?
To do Masters in Business Administration

2. Why do you want a degree from US?
US is way ahead in managerial development as compared to other countries of the world. US B-Schools offers new and advanced courses like Information Technology Management, Entrepreneurship, etc and there is a lot of flexibility in these courses, which is absent in our native Universities. Moreover US B-Schools stress on practical knowledge & not just book learning.

Important: Don’t keep your answer very long. Just remember the points. The points are in bold italics in my case.

3. Why don’t you study in your nation?
Masters Education in other nations lays more emphasis on the theory part rather than the practical, Hence a Masters degree from my country does not really help in fulfilling the career goals of a person. Other Universities don't have enough research facilities to support students in their studies, whereas US Universities have sound infrastructure to support students to gain both the theoretical as well as practical knowledge. Moreover, the courses in our country are not flexible as in US.

4. What is your GMAT/TOEFL score?
My GMAT score is 560 and TOEFL score is 250.

5. Why your verbal score is so low in GMAT?
I answered the first few questions incorrectly and I couldn’t improve my score later even after performing well later. But you can see that the TOEFL score is decent which shows my proficiency in the English language.

6. How many Applications? Acceptance or Rejection?
I have applied in 4 universities. Got admit in 1, reject in 1 and the rest are awaited.

7. Do you intend to come back? Or What if you are offered a job in US?
Yes! I have family and economic ties to my native land. I have an established family business, which is more than 60 years old. I am going to US to upgrade my skills and knowledge in Business which will give confidence when I come back to my country and join my fathers business.

8. What if I reject you?
I have tried my best to fulfill all the requirements to get a visa. With the kind of academic and financial background that I have, I never thought that such a question would ever arise.

9. Why should I allow you a visa?
I have tried my best to fulfill all the requirements to get a visa. I have a strong educational and financial background and a genuine reason to go to US. So, I expect a visa from you.

10. Why do you want to do MBA?
There will be greater need for the managerial expert in our expanding business firm. The MBA program will provide me with an advanced preparation in management, enabling me to participate as educated professional in society and the business environment and compete in a dynamic global economy.

11. Why this University?
(Do some research over the University and the courses offered there. Here you can also mention about the research work of your interest undertaken by some Professor. Name the professor. )
The first and foremost factor for selecting this university were the courses being offered, I also contacted the seniors there to know more about the university and got a very positive reply from them. The course is designed in such a way that it develops knowledge of the functions and techniques of management and blends an understanding of social, technological, economic and political environment into the core of the program.

12. What are the courses offered? Or What type of courses are there?
The different type of courses offered are economic concept in management, accounting, operation analysis, financial strategy, marketing strategy, entrepreneurship.

13. How did you come to know about your University?
I came to know about the University from Graduate School Magazine of USEFI, internet and email exchanges with the seniors.

14. What do you know about the University?
The University is located in south-east of Massachusetts, one hour driving distance from Boston and 35 minutes from Providence. The University is surrounded by small towns like New Bedford and Fall River. The University offers around 60 courses to graduates and undergraduates and there are more than 320 full time faculties. There are more than 7000 students in the University.

Statement of Purpose: Sample I

Life has always been a smooth flowing brook with small dashes here and there. It has certainly reached a critical juncture when I have to desire where to turn and what to do next.

Like every other person, I too got a variety of choices from which, I have got to select the best one. Making the choice was not simple enough because this was the choice, which was going to shape my life and decide my future. There were a variety of factors like ‘Mental Satisfaction’, ‘Probability of success’ and ‘Environment I had to adopt into’, that were going to affect my choice.

I realized that studying in an American University would be just the right choice for me. Through the experience of the students who have already made it to the U.S. from India and from books, I have come to know that the standard of education and the ambience of studying in USA are quite superior when compared to India. Therefore, with the advanced research facilities available, U.S.A. is my obvious choice.

My fascination towards ‘Solid Mechanics’ developed as early as in the 10th grade when I received a book on ‘Preliminary mechanics’ by ‘R.S.Khurmi’ as a gift for a scholarship sponsored by N.S.S. I was then really fascinated by the complexities of different structures. The interest and fascination has evolved into a determination to study the subject deeply and to do some valuable research in the field.

As a beginner, I had always loved to consider the design of a structure or machine components, where, it is essential to ensure the response of the elements in such a way that they can perform their function with a high degree of confidence and reliability. So I had always admired at the enormous basks and the scientific challenges faced by an engineer specialized in the field of ‘Solid Mechanics’. Moreover, the economic factors are also to be considered for optimum results by the engineer. Thus I got fascinated toward the tasks of an engineer specialized in ‘Solid mechanics’ and I longed to be one.

It is necessary ford the designer to be able to calculate stresses, deflections and buckling loads, and to be able to relate to them to the appropriate limiting safe values in practice. I have realized that, as a designer, one has to depend upon many factors like ‘nature of the old’, ‘shape of the component’ and the mechanical properties of the materials selected’ to design a component and it is this aspect that makes the study and research on ‘solid mechanics’ interesting enough. Often dreams and goals are set according to one’s budding interests. My interest in the field helped realize what I would best fit in and how I should shape my future.

I have also realized that possessing ‘Basic Technical Knowledge’ does not alone make a good research man. My active involvement in organizations like Retract (a youth wing of Rotary International) and AAES (Association Of Automobile Engineering Students), has really helped me a lot in developing my leadership qualities, organizational skills, communication skills and improved my adaptability to work in a group with utmost sincerity and dedication. Therefore, I believe I have all the attributes of a good research man.

The field of ‘Solid Mechanics’ has developed rapidly in recent years with application in the field of ‘axial, bending and torsion stresses’. I have always dreamt about being engineers specialized in ‘Applied mechanics’ and I have discovered that there are many opportunities for advances, in the field of ‘Stresses’ in ‘Solid Mechanics’. Therefore, I would like to make it to your university to do an advanced research in this field.

From the information I received from your website and from the people who have already made to the U.S., have realized that your university is the best to do my advanced study and research. So I have decided to apply to the university so that I can fulfill my dreams and have a good and challenging career.

Exam Essentials

1. If you do not have a sound basic knowledge of English, it is best to take English language courses before taking a TOEFL preparation course. TOEFL exam preparation materials are designed to prepare you for the test. They are not designed to teach you English.
2. Begin your  studies as soon as you decide to take the exam. It will not be useful to try to learn everything the week before the exam date.

3. Thoroughly learning a small amount of information daily is better than insufficiently or inaccurately learning a large amount of information at one sitting.
4. Listening to a movie or radio program in English is good for building your listening comprehension skills. Systematically add new words to your vocabulary. Even though these activities are not directly related to the TOEFL test, they will help you.

5. Work carefully through the exercise in preparation for the TOEFL Test. It is better to concentrate the most effort on your weak areas.

TOEFL Books

TOEFL Books

Characteristics of a Good Book for TOEFL

Market is flooded with a huge range of books that offer the material required for the preparation. The book you select for should have a vast number of practice sets and explanatory answers to each practice paper. It will be highly recommended if you purchase a book that has a copy of CD or DVD with it which can enhance your learning at computer. Here are few of the books that are recommended for the examination. These books can be purchased online or from a nearby book store. There are websites which offer old books at low prices which are being auctioned by students who had appeared for the exam earlier.

Book List

The Official Guide: It is the most reliable and authentic book and has everything you would require for the examination. This book includes the detailed description about each topic and questions related to it. Comments from examiners to the students’ answers along with the scoring information also form a part of the book

Kaplan's:The book will prepare you for all types of passages, questions and situations in the exam. Most importantly this will make you comfortable with the format of the exam

Barron's: This book is helpful for people who are short of time and have not been able to get much time for preparation. The book has been divided into various chapters to cover all the topics in a systematic manner.

TOEFL Exam Preparation Tips

TOEFL Exam Preparation Tips

Practice budgeting your time. The TOEFL test is taken under time-limit pressures. Learn to use your time wisely so that you can complete each section.

Identify your problem areas. Concentrate on those areas, but review other areas as well.

Work well on vocabulary trying to understand American and British english at same pace.Learn few words of Vocabulary daily.

Know your goal. Write to the administration office of the college or university of your choice, and ask for their entrance requirements. They will confirm what TOEFL score is required for admission.

Check yourself on the Practice Tests to discover if you usually change correct answers to incorrect answers when unsure of an item.

If you do change correct answers to incorrect answers, you will want to stay with your first choice when you take the TOEFL test.

TOEFL Examination: Do's and Dont's

1. You can ask for the volume of the cassette to be adjusted at the beginning of the test administration, but remember that it is unlikely that all test-takers will be pleased.
2. Listen to the instructions carefully. The cassette will explain how to complete the personal data sheet and how to mark your answer sheet. It is important that you follow these instructions.
3. If you need to erase, do so thoroughly using a clean eraser.
4. Work quickly through the easy item. Be sure to skip a space on the answer sheet when you skip a difficult item. After you answer the easy items, return to the ones you skipped.
5. A light check mark on your answer sheet by any item you wish to recheck should be carefully erased before the end of the test.
6. If you finish one of the sections early, go back through only that section to double check your answers. Do not work on any other section of the test. This is not permitted. If you are caught working on the wrong section, your test will be invalidated.
7. Be prepare for changes. Occasionally a TOEFL test has a change in format or more items to answer in a longer period of time.
8. Answer all questions; however, do not waste time on difficult items. If you think one of two answers is correct, choose one and go on. If you don't know, then you should guess. You are not penalized for guessing, and your guess may be correct.
9. If you see that the time is almost finished and you can't read and answer all the remaining items, choose A, B, C, or D as your guess letter and quickly answer the items with that one letter. You are more likely to get some correct answers if you use one letter than if you use them all.
